Harry Potter Month: The Hilarity of Fred & George Weasley

Harry Potter Month is hosted by Faith at Geeky Zoo Girl and Micheline at Lunar Rainbows Reviews. This awesome event runs all through July, and you can find more information about it here.

I am so excited to write this post, and really, I don't know why I didn't think to write it during last year's event. Let's see if I can get through composing this post without taking multiple laugh breaks; I'm not very optimistic about those odds!

I love so many characters in the Potterverse, but none crack me up like Fred and George do. Their humor will always be one of the highlights of the series for me, and today I'm reminiscing about a few of my very favorite instances of Fred and George hilarity from both the books and the films:

  • I immediately knew I was going to love the twins the second I met them in Sorcerer's Stone, when Fred tricked Mrs. Weasley into thinking that he was George for a moment. "Honestly, woman, you call yourself our mother?" still makes me chuckle.
  • Near the end of Sorcerer's Stone, when Dumbledore tells Harry that Fred and George tried to send Harry a toilet seat while he was in the hospital wing. It just seems like a very Fred and George thing to do. XD
  • In Prisoner of Azkaban, when the twins imitate (and mock) Percy's overly formal greeting to Harry in the Leaky Cauldron.
  • Getting Dudley to eat Ton-Tongue Toffee in Goblet of Fire! He totally deserved the consequences!
  • Fred and George's effort to get around Dumbledore's Age Line surrounding the Goblet of Fire, and their spectacular failure, LOL. The skirmish that breaks out between the twins in the GoF film makes this scene even funnier!
  • Everything to do with Weasleys' Wizard Wheezes! U-No-Poo—BAHAHAHA!! Yes, I am easily amused by toilet humor. I also love how Ron tries to score a discount on merchandise for being their brother, and the twins refuse him! The first Deathly Hallows movie takes the humor even further, with Fred and George actually raising the price on poor Ron, LOL.
  • I've saved my absolute favorite Fred and George moment for last—their unforgettable exit from Hogwarts. Harry needed a diversion so he could break into Umbridge's office and use her fireplace to talk to Sirius, and did Fred and George ever deliver on the diversion. The Portable Swamp is my favorite invention of theirs, and just the mental image of Filch and Umbridge failing to dispose of it brings me such immense joy. I was a bit bummed that the Portable Swamp didn't make it into the Order of the Phoenix film, but Fred and George's big screen departure made its own lasting impression.

What Fred and George moments made you laugh the most?

  1. I do love when the twins bewitch snowballs to hit Quirrel in the turban, AKA VOLDY's FACE XD Honestly though, you have all my favorites here^^ the all time favorite being their Portable Swamp. That just shows how gifted they truly are at magic, if Weasley Wizard Wheezes didn't make that crystal clear. A swamp that Umbridge can't get rid of is perfection ♥

Oh and the Ton-Tongue toffee on Dudley was excellent. He deserved it and the Dursley's reactions to it all was priceless. The Age-Line scene was classic, I especially love in the books how Dumbledore sees it all and it makes him chuckle :D Fred and George are the best!

    1. Fred and George had so many brilliant moments, but the Ton-Tongue Toffee is definitely one of their finest! I forgot about them bewitching the snowballs; that's what Voldemort gets for taking up residence on the back of someone's head! XD

  2. Gosh, you've included all of my favourite Fred and George moments here. But I have to say that the gnome scene in CoS had me bursting out in laughs! Oh, and of course when they used the Ton-Tongue Toffee on Dudley! How did that not make the movie???? It was pure comedy GOLD!

    1. YES- the gnomes! XD That would've made a great scene in the CoS film! There were quite a few Fred and George antics that I wish had made it to the big screen, but at least they still literally got to leave Hogwarts with a bang!

  3. The books would not be the same without Fred and George))) I love all the moments that you've listed. But another favourite moment of mine is in CoS when everyone is so scared of Harry because they think that he's the Heir of Slytherin but Fred and George just find the whole thing a joke: "Harry's in a hurry," said Fred. "Yeah, he's nipping off to the Chamber of Secrets for a cup of tea with his fanged servant," said George, chortling.

    1. Fred and George were great at playing up the Heir of Slytherin rumors surrounding Harry, lol. Love how they found the humor in just about every situation!

  4. Fred and George are Hogwarts legends. Their war on Umbridge will always be some of my favorite parts of OotP. I also love in the first book when they tell Ginny that they'll send her a toilet seat so that she'll stop crying because they're leaving and laugh. They can be good brothers when they want to be. They were also great friends to Harry and I always think it's funny when they follow him around in CoS proclaiming him the Heir of Slytherin. I agree their U-No-Poo advertisement was hilarious and watching Mrs. Weasley's horror made it so much better. Although they may not be main characters, they are irreplaceable. Thanks for reminding me about some of their best moments!

    1. I loved when they told Peeves to give Umbridge hell in OotP, and he totally did, lol! And I can't imagine the series without them, either!

  5. I just love these two. They are definitely some of my favorite characters. I am with you, the moment I met them on the page I knew that I'd like them. Micheline mentioned one of my fav's which was when you realize they've been hitting Voldemort's face with snowballs. I also think it was amazingly appropriate for these two to share the Marauder's Map with Harry and teach him the "I solemnly swear I'm up to no good" way to get in with "Mischief Managed" as well LOL. I also appreciated the way they lit up some of the darker moments of the story. Their joke shop and U-No-Poo when Voldy was running all rampant was hilarious. They saint-like joke when George got hit was appropriate twin response. The books definitely would not have been the same without them. Even Peeves followed their orders.

    1. I wonder if JKR laughed the entire time she wrote about Fred and George hitting Quirrell with snowballs, knowing all along that they were actually smacking Voldermort's face! XD I also loved that they were the ones who passed the Marauder's Map on to Harry; that was definitely meant to be. And the saint-like joke- they truly knew how to make everyone laugh in any scenario!

  6. These are all great moments! The two of them are hilariously mischievous. I love that Fred and George enchant snowballs to hit the back of Quirrell's head, which means they were hitting Voldemort in the face. When I first realized that, I burst into laughter. It's great! In Chamber of Secrets, I liked that they walked around with Harry calling for people to get out of the way because the heir of Slytherin was passing. "Make way for the heir of Slytherin, seriously evil wizard coming through..." I just really enjoyed how they handled that entire exchange. When everyone was afraid of Harry (12 year old Harry), they saw fit to joke about it in a way that wasn't encouraging the rumor or harming Harry. They just dispelled the tension a little bit, even if people didn't realize that's what they were doing.

    1. They were so great at making people laugh when needed. Even when the books became darker, you could always depend on the twins to lighten up the tone, at least for a little while!
