Harry Potter Moment of the Week (135)

Harry Potter Moment of the Week is a meme hosted by Uncorked Thoughts and Lunar Rainbows Reviews. The aim of this meme is to share with fellow bloggers a character, spell, chapter, object or quote from the books/films/J. K. Rowling herself or anything Potter related! A list of upcoming topics can be found here.

This week's topic is:
How Did Quirrell Add to the Overall Storyline?

I saw the first film before I read the books, so all I knew about Quirrell's character was from his scenes in the movie. It didn't occur to me that he was more than what he appeared to be, and I was surprised when he turned out to be the villain and not Snape. For me, Quirrell provided quite the plot twist, and the fact that Voldemort had taken up residence on the back of his head demonstrated that even in his weakened state and without his own body, the Dark Lord was still very, very much a threat.

  1. My mind was quite frankly blown when Voldemort revealed himself in the back of Quirrell's head. Like you (and like Harry), I'd suspected Snape so that was quite the twist! And I agree: even as a ghost (or whatever the hell Voldemort is here) he's still ridiculously dangerous and scary o_O

    1. Of all the places Voldemort could've turned up, I definitely didn't think it would be on the back of Quirrell's head, LOL! I remember watching the Sorcerer's Stone for the first time and shuddering at the thought of what Voldemort would be like fully restored to his body if he was still this dangerous without one.

  2. Quirrel's "possession" was so creepy! I thought it was silly in the book then I saw the movie and it was yikes!

    1. I always wonder if I would've figured out what was going on with him if I'd read the book first. Movie Quirrell definitely took me by surprise; I wasn't expecting to see Voldemort on the back of his head!

  3. Voldemort's power stretches far beyond most everyone's thoughts. This is the very beginning of the horcruxes. We know that somehow Voldemort evaded death, and feeding off of other people and creatures helps him a bit. I was convinced Quirrell was innocent of everything but that stutter of his, which turned out to be false too!

    1. The depth of Quirrell's deception is quite staggering, from the stutter to having two heads! The scene in the Sorcerer's Stone film when he takes off his turban still gives me the chills!

  4. You are so right, it was on heck of a plot twist! It's interesting rereading SS and seeing all the foreshadowing while knowing that there was no way I would have ever figured it out. Ten points to Rowling!

    1. For sure! I was so surprised to see Quirrell standing in front of the Mirror of Erised; I'd totally been expecting Snape instead, lol.

  5. I would've never guess that he was hitching a ride in Quirrell's turban. I know that part was quite a big shocker to me. I just though he had a helper in the castle that was doing his bidding, not that he was actually on the premises!

    1. It's so scary to think that Voldermort was so close to Harry all that time! I never suspected Quirrell, which makes his deception even more ingenius!
