Harry Potter Moment of the Week (13): Why I Love the Lego HP Video Games

It's a free week, and I thought it'd be fun to talk about:
Why I Love the Lego Harry Potter Video Games

The first Lego video game title I ever played was Lego Star Wars, based on the six movies, and it's still one of my favorite video games. The attention to detail is amazing, and there's a lot of humor in the game, too. Plus, the Lego versions of the characters are just too cute!

When I found out that there was going to be a Lego Harry Potter, I was ecstatic. I was a tad disappointed that the game was only going to include the story up to Goblet of Fire, but there was a lot of speculation that once all the movies were released, there would be a follow-up game. And the speculation turned out to be true!

Playing these games is incredibly fun because you practically get to live the books/movies—in Lego form! I cannot gush enough about the level of detail; exploring Hogwarts alone can take hours. It's an absolute thrill being able to cast spells, ride a broomstick, and even compete in the Triwizard Tournament! Just about every significant HP moment is brilliantly recreated in the games, which allow you to play as almost any character you can think of.

My cousins/blogging colleagues Ally and Melissa, their brother, and I have spent many, many hours playing Lego HP. Despite being family, we have the worst teamwork EVER, which in the past has caused a lot of arguing, but a lot of laughing as well. Instead of freezing Cornish pixies, someone repeatedly froze a teammate. There was a huge dispute over who would drive the flying car and who would have to ride the little scooter to escape Aragog's children. Need your partner to levitate an object so you can reach an upper level? Yeah, it's going to be a long wait while that person collects stuff on the lower level. What happens when both players want to play as the same character? Argument. And so forth.

Even if you're not much of a video game player, if you love HP, then these games are absolutely worth trying. Even after completing them to 100%, I think they have a very high replay value because, after all, it's Harry Potter!

  1. I love that you chose to gush about these games because ever since you first mentioned them I have been itching to get my hands on them. I don't know why but for some reason I remember the lego Star Wars game coming out, and as cute as it seemed I just never got around to playing it. They sound absolutely brilliant though, all that detail and being able to play any character is a big plus too :D Though I can definitely see me, the bf & our friends getting into lots of *ahem* heated discussions (and laughing too of course) over the bits you and your cousins did too hahaha! Living out the HP moments in a different and interactive way like you said sounds amazing!! Oh and I'll be getting the Star Wars one too as soon as I can afford them. Eep! XD

    1. As awesome as Lego Star Wars is (and it IS awesome!), Lego HP is just perfect. I can't think of any character who isn't in the games, and it is so, so much fun to see that magical world come to life- with Lego bricks! I loved playing with Legos when I was a kid, so Lego + HP is one of my biggest dreams come true, lol.

  2. Just reading about your experience with it makes me want to give it a try! I'm a HUGE Harry Potter fan (it's only the best thing ever), but I can't say I've ever been videogame articulate. Maybe this is the right place for me to start. :) I can imagine how much fun it must be to explore hogwarts and and cast spells. And riding broomsticks! I'm glad to hear there's an attention to detail, too. Thanks for sharing!

    1. I'm not a very good gamer at all, but the design of these games is incredibly well thought-out and friendly to players of any age and skill level. Getting to roam around Hogwarts is one of my favorite things about the games; there are so many places to explore and mini-challenges to complete.

  5. All true! We haven't gotten the 2nd one yet, but we have Lego HP 1-4. My son really loves to play it especially when he has friends over. I think it was brilliantly done. Jaclyn @ JC's Book Haven.

    1. I hope you guys get to play Years 5-7! The game controls were tweaked a little to make them a bit easier to work with, and some really neat features were added, like the Aguamenti spell and Hermione's bag that holds everything!

    1. I had some trouble with Years 1-4 after downloading a game update that then made it impossible to enter Gringotts. I think I deleted the update, and the game worked fine again. I had no problems with Years 5-7. Hope you get to play it soon, and that the game works OK for you!
