Pre-Ordering Books, or: I Need to Read This NOW!

Confession: when it comes to waiting for much anticipated new releases, be they books, movies, or whatever, I am not a patient woman. You’re talking to someone who went running to Best Buy the day that the original Star Wars trilogy became available on DVD for the first time. I am also guilty of going to midnight releases for various Twilight movie DVDs. (Did I really do that? Ah, yes. Yes I did.)

Unsurprisingly, I do pre-order books. Not often—just the ones that I must read the very same day they’re released or I shall be very grumpy. I’m talking about The Raven Cycle, Throne of Glass, and any Shadowhunter novels. Yes, I am all about instant gratification when certain books are involved. These are the titles that I clear the rest of my reading schedule for and time my current read to end so that I can dive straight into the new arrival on its release day (as long as there isn’t a delivery mishap, which, unfortunately, has happened). The day that a release date is announced for George R.R. Martin’s The Winds of Winter, I’ll be adding that to my Amazon cart faster than you can say winter is coming.

Something I’ve noticed lately is the offering of some nifty swag to those who pre-order various titles. I have to say, there have been a handful of books that I’ve definitely been motivated to order sooner rather than later because the incentives were very sweet indeed, and they were books I’d planned to buy eventually anyway.

Do you pre-order books? Are there any upcoming releases that you absolutely MUST have in your hands the day they’re available? Have pre-order goodies ever persuaded you to place your order before the release date?

  1. Well this post of yours is certainly timely, seeing as I JUST finished pre-ordering ToG5, the ToG Coloring Book and another Garth Nix book LOL! Yes my dear, I DO pre-order books, but like you, I reserve that for books in a series I'm obsessed with. Naturally, I pre-ordered Raven King last year, along with ACOMAF and some others. Authors like Stiefvater, Sanderson and Maas all insists on writing ridiculously addictive series, so it has to be done. I also just realized that I'd sent in my pre-order confirmation to Bloomsbury for QoS to get ToG buttons but I never got them *sniff* so i just sent off an email in the hopes that I'll be able to get my ToG swag XD

    1. I hope you get your ToG buttons! I'd be bummed if I didn't receive my pre-order goodies. Hehe, I'm running a little late because I haven't done my Raven King pre-order yet, but it will happen very, very soon. :D I did, however, just pre-order A Gathering of Shadows (have you seen those character cards?!) and the new Shadowhunters novel because I can't get enough of those books, lol!

  2. You know I'm an arc addict and at times I get lucky where I get a highly anticipated book in the mail in exchange for a review. I think I've only pre-order Karen Marie Moning's last two Fever books. I skipped the the one that released a few weeks ago because I forgot. Which is a good thing too, from the feedback it's kinda sucky.

    1. Oh, that's too bad to hear! I thought Iced was OK, but I'm not much of a Dani fan and definitely preferred Mac's books. I still haven't gotten to Burned; will get there eventually, lol.

  3. I don't think I've ever pre-ordered a book before. I HAVE gotten books the day they were released though, or you know, right around midnight like with the final Harry Potter books. :) I like the pre-order deals but I don't always seem them. I know one blog that randomly shares them, but I wish someone updated a list with those type of deals because I'd probably be persuaded to pre-order for some! haha

    1. I'd probably do a lot more pre-orders if I saw that list, lol. I wish that I'd been able to go to one of the midnight HP release events; I bet they were a ton of fun!

  4. I don't really pre-order for some reason, I guess cause I'm lazy and I'd rather put in the effort of ordering when I know I'll be getting the book. But preorder goodies have made me - mostly for the TOG goodies. :) And good for you for going to a Twilight midnight release! :D

    1. The funny thing about the Twilight midnight DVD releases was that I wouldn't actually watch the movie until later the next day, so I could have just picked up my DVD when the stores opened in the morning, lol. But getting the DVD at midnight was part of being a dedicated fan at the time, and it was fun to see all of the other fans who turned out for these events.

  5. I almost never pre-order, but I HAVE done it a few times for the pre-order deals. I have shared a couple of pre-order deals that I've seen around sometimes, but I haven't made an effort to keep track of them. Might be worth doing!

    1. It seems like pre-order offers are becoming more and more common, and I'll definitely be keeping an eye out for any special deals for books that I know I'll want to read as soon as they're released.
