This week's topic is:
James Potter vs. Severus Snape
As much as I respect James for being Harry Potter's dad and all, I have to go with Snape on this one. Whether you love Snape or not, he just commands your attention from the second he appears on the page in the first book. I admit to having a kind of love-to-hate relationship with him throughout most of the series. That is, until Deathly Hallows. When Harry views Snape's memories in the Pensieve . . . I was not prepared for any of that. Nor was I prepared to get all teary, either, because he was probably one of the last characters who I'd ever thought would make me bawl.
Ditto on this one :). I didn't like James at all. We weren't given a chance to get to know him, but I think overall Snape is so much more admirable. Granted we don't find out until the last minute and then we don't even get a chance to know him :(. Great choice! x
ReplyDeleteI was just stunned by what his memories revealed in DH. He really had quite a sad life, and though he wasn't always the nicest person, part of me does feel sympathy for him.
DeleteHaha I love how divided we are this week - we tend to agree so much more often. I can definitely agree that Snape as a character was a delight to try and figure out. No wait, it was torture >.< I remember dying to find out why Dumbledore trusted him, or if Snape had managed to fool the most clever wizard in the world. I was happy that he ended up making the right choice but I was never able to forgive how awful he acted towards Harry (and his friends) James on the other hand certainly came off as a jerk in Snape's memories but he must have redeemed himself to win over Lily. Both James and Snape sacrificed themselves for Harry though, so I feel for both of them. I guess I can forgive James easier than Snape >.< but you're right though, Snape did the best job at commanding our attention whatever he was doing :)
ReplyDeleteSnape was always such an enigma to me, and though his treatment of Harry and just about everyone associated with Harry made me cringe, I couldn't help being oddly fascinated by his character. I wanted to know what made him tick and what drove his actions, and wow, was I ever surprised to find out. James gets a lot of flak for what he did to Snape during their Hogwarts days, but you're right- Snape treats Harry horribly, which doesn't make him any better than James. Actually, Snape is probably worse, lol. He did have some good in him, though, and I must give him credit for that.
