Top Ten Tuesday was created by The Broke and the Bookish and is now hosted by That Artsy Reader Girl.
This week's topic is:
Childhood Favorites
This was a really fun topic to do! Once I started thinking about the books I loved as a kid, I ended up with more than 10 and had to narrow down my list, lol. I also had a lot of fun looking at the retro book covers, especially the ones from the 80s!
1. Just As Long As We're Together by Judy Blume
This is one of my all-time favorite books. I was about the same age as the characters when I first read it, and they were so relatable. I still have my copy, and it's well-worn from having been read so many times.
2. Sweet Valley Twins by Francine Pascal
I was kinda late to the Sweet Valley party, but once I started reading these, I couldn't get enough. Whenever I got some new SV books to read, I'd have one almost completely finished on the car ride home from the bookstore, lol.
3. Sixth Grade Secrets by Louis Sachar
I was in sixth grade when I read this, lol, and I tried, rather unsuccessfully, getting some of my classmates to read it because I thought it was such a cool book.
4. On the Banks of Plum Creek by Laura Ingalls Wilder
The Little House books were another childhood reading staple, and this was my favorite out of all of them. I also loved watching the TV series.
5. Stage Fright by Ann M. Martin
I never read The Baby-Sitters Club, but I did really enjoy this Ann M. Martin book. I borrowed it from the library and was bummed when I wanted to reread it and could no longer find it on the shelves. I only remembered the title, not the author, and almost 25 years later, I found it on Goodreads and finally learned who the author was!
6. Say Cheese by Patricia Reilly Giff
I'm not a huge fan of this version of the cover, but I still love this book. This was part of a series, and sadly I only got to read about three of the books.
7. Encyclopedia Brown by Donald J. Sobol
I LOVED seeing Encylopedia Brown pull a bunch of seemingly random clues together to solve the case. Every time.
8. The Berenstain Bears by Stan & Jan Berenstain
Another series that I loved! I think my mom was trying to give me some not-so-subtle hints when she read The Berenstain Bears and the Messy Room to me, lol.
9. Richard Scarry's Great Big Schoolhouse by Richard Scarry
I borrowed this book from the library so often that my parents got it for me for Christmas so I could reread it as many times as I wanted, lol.
10. The Secret of NIMH by Seymour Reit
This is the graphic novel-esque adaptation of the movie. I got my copy through a school book club order, and it was another bedtime reading favorite, which is a little weird now that I think about it considering that the story is quite dark at times.
What are your favorite childhood reads?
I loved The Secret of NIMH (the movie anyway- I've never read the book).
ReplyDeleteThe book made me want to see the movie, and when I did, I thought it was so cool watching the characters and events from the book in animated form. It was a really good movie!
DeleteI loved how dark it was!
DeleteAww, those Berenstain Bears were childhood favorites of mine. I LOVED those books. I also *think* I read some of the 'Little House' books, but honestly, don't remember them. Guess that means someday I should give them a re-read. :) Happy Top Ten Tuesday!
ReplyDeleteI had a bunch of the Berenstain Bears books and kind of wish I had kept them, lol. They were such good stories!
DeleteThis list made me feel so nostaligic! Excellent choices.
ReplyDeleteI definitely felt nostalgic thinking back on the books I read when I was much younger, lol. So many great memories!
DeleteOh this takes me back! Sweet Valley High and literally anything Judy Blume were my jam. It makes me want to go back and read them, but I know it wouldn't be the same.
ReplyDeletewww.tbrandbeyond.com
I wish I'd read more Judy Blume books during my childhood! I'm not sure why I didn't; maybe because I kept rereading this particular one. I still have my copy, and even though the pages are dogeared and the spine is creased, I can't bear to part with it.
DeleteNice, someone else who appreciates the Sweet Valley Twins. I only ever see the H.S./Uni versions mentioned.
ReplyDeleteI had a brief infatuation with Encyclopedia Brown, but I always thought he was African-American. Not sure if I thought that based on his name, or there was a different cover edition, or I'm thinking of another series...
And aw, Little House! I should have mentioned that. I was always partial to the first book (in the Big Woods), which I read multiple times before learning of the sequels, but that is a fantastic series.
I never really got into Sweet Valley High. I read a few of them, but Sweet Valley Twins was 100% my thing. I also don't see SVT mentioned as much as SVH, so I'm happy to give the Sweet Valley Twins series some love today!
DeleteI loved the Little House books, too.
ReplyDeleteMy TTT.
It's wonderful to see how many readers grew up with these books!
DeleteThe Little House series made my list too. They are classics! Here is my Top Ten Tuesday.
ReplyDeleteWhen I saw this week's topic, I knew I had to include Little House on my list!
DeleteBerenstain Bears will always be my favorite. I don't have Sweet Valley High on my list, but I remember enjoying them and the show.
ReplyDeleteI also remember watching the Berenstain Bears' Christmas special as a kid. And that's right- there was a Sweet Valley High TV show! I almost forgot about that!
DeleteI loved The Secret of NIMH! My teacher read it to me in 4th grade. The book was way better than the movie.
ReplyDeleteMy mom read it to me, and it's still one of my favorite childhood memories. I still have the book, too.
DeleteGreat list. Judy Blume's books were a staple of my childhood reading, and I adored the Sweet Valley books too.
ReplyDeleteI loved seeing Judy Blume and Sweet Valley on so many lists. Brought back some great reading memories!
DeleteIs the secret of Nimh film based on the Rats of Nimh books? Because I loved them (or the first two, I think I read?) I'll have to look that up!
ReplyDeleteYes- the film is based on the Rats of NIMH books. I haven't read those but would like to one day, especially to see how closely the film adaptation follows the books!
DeleteI remember reading that exact Berenstain Bears book all of the time as a kid! This is such a great list. It makes me want to go back and revisit some old childhood favorites of mine.
ReplyDeleteMe too! It's been wonderful to see how many bloggers loved quite a few of the same books that I did growing up!
