Harry Potter Month: Harry Potter Childhood Games

Harry Potter Month is hosted by Faith at Geeky Zoo Girl and Micheline at Lunar Rainbows Reviews. This awesome event runs all through July, and you can find more information about it here.

The incredible world of Harry Potter had a great impact on my imagination as a child. Some of my fondest memories with my siblings are when we played Harry Potter related games together. I remember spending a great deal of time in our small backyard in Brooklyn gathering dirt from the floor. After we had gathered enough, we would deem the dirt to be Floo powder. We would then enthusiastically throw the Floo powder to the ground and scream, “Diagon Alley!” Although we never managed to Floo ourselves to the wizarding world, we would tirelessly gather and throw Floo powder over and over again.

Another game we used to play together merely consisted of us pretending to be Harry, Hermione, and Ron. I would always call dibs on Harry, Melissa would be Ron, and Denis, being the youngest and last to pick, would be Hermione. We would use the crawl space underneath our parents’ bed as the “Chamber of Secrets” and pretend to see Voldemort’s face in the windows. Needless to say, Harry Potter made my childhood a lot of fun.

  1. I can only imagine the fun and games I'd have come up with if HP had been a part of my childhood! I like your Floo Powder game, though it's a shame it didn't Floo you all to Diagon Alley XD And yeah, pretending to be the HP crew would be awesome too. I SO would have called dibs on Harry all the time too!! ♥ Thanks for sharing your memories Ally :)

    1. Haha, it didn't matter how many times we did it, we always held hope that our "floo powder" would work. Denis would always whine and complain about being Hermione but I was too much of a brat to let him be Harry lol.

  2. That's so cute! Do you live in FL too? Damn, if I live close to Lee, I'd be at the parks as often as I can. Oh lord, I want to go back to HP!!!

    1. Yeah, I actually live right across the street from Lee, lol. Yes!! I know how you feel, I've only been to HP World once and I want to go back!

  3. That sounds like so much fun! :D I love the imagination of little kids and remembering what I used to play when I was younger too. My youngest brother created a "trap" for our older brother out of string that I later used as a Aragog's web as well as Shelob's web (Lord of the Rings). There was always something intensely imaginative going on in our home.

    1. The homemade Aragog web sounds so awesome! I'm sure my siblings and I would have had tons of fun with that one, lol.

  4. AH! See this is part of why I wish I was younger when I was introduced to HP. My son and his friends have played all kinds of Harry Potter games. I LOVE the floo powder game though...that definitely sounds like something I would've done. I think it's great that you three pretended to be the trio. Sounds like a ton of fun!

    1. Yeah, it was always loads of fun to play pretend with my siblings. I'm so glad we had the influence of fandoms such as Harry Potter and Star Wars to shape our imaginations, haha. :)

  5. This is adorable - I don't really remember playing Harry Potter games as a kid but I'm sure we must have done. I do remember playing games of kiss/marry/kill etc with Harry Potter characters when we were a bit older, and my best friend and I bonding over writing fanfics.

It's funny that in your game of pretending to be the Trio Denis got stuck with Hermione - I would have called dibs on her!

    1. My best friend and I once tried writing a HP fanfic too but we couldn't agree on anything, so the fanfic just kind of died lol. Yeah, my sister and I bullied Denis into doing a lot of things he didn't want to do when he was little, haha.
