Alison Can Read. It's a great way to meet other book bloggers!
This week's question is:
The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater kind of fell flat for me. The writing and world-building were both outstanding; I just couldn't get into the book. I kept waiting for the action to pick up, but the book maintained a very slow pace throughout (at least for me it did).

I have not read this but I have been trying to get my daughter to. Yes, she is my guinea pig. That's why we have kids right?? ;)

Lol! I sort of have the opposite relationship with my teenage cousins where I'm the guinea pig and they try to convince me to read the books they're not sure they're going to like first.
DeleteThis book has been sitting on my Kindle for awhile.

I'm glad that I borrowed this one from the library instead of buying it because it really wasn't my cup of tea.
DeleteThanks for the follow!
Haven't read that book before :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for dropping by my fff! Followed back and happy friday!

DeleteLOL, yup. I know what you mean. My answer was her Raven Boys book. I really hate her writing style.
ReplyDeleteThanka for stopping by.
And I was hoping that The Raven Boys would be better. I might still try it when the library gets a copy.
DeleteThat's too bad- I actually enjoyed the slowness of it for some reason. Usually I hate it but in Scorpio Races, I kind of... I don't know- I just really liked it :)

I'm glad to hear that you liked it! It just didn't click with me.
DeleteI was a bit let down by this book too and to be honest that's why I'm afraid to read The Raven Boys ...
ReplyDeleteI liked the premise of The Raven Boys when I read it, but I'm also a bit wary because of my experience with The Scorpio Races.
DeleteI absolutely loved this book, but I do understand the mixed reviews. It seems like people either loved or hated this one (I fell on the love side of the spectrum). It was slow, but I actually liked it in this case. Sorry to hear it didn't quite work for you!
ReplyDeleteOld follower passing through. My FF is here:

I guess that based on the synopsis, I was expecting a lot more action. I'm glad that you enjoyed reading this, though!
DeleteI haven't read this one, I failed to make it through her wolves of mercy falls series, but I think I may enjoy this one! Thanks for stopping by my My FF, my Lovelies!
ReplyDeleteI've been thinking about reading Shiver, though I've heard mixed things about the rest of the series. The Scorpio Races just wasn't for me; I hope that it works out better for you!
DeleteOld follower here... good to know you thought this one had slow pacing, I've been considering reading it!
ReplyDeletehttp://littlesqueed.blogspot.com/2012/09/feature-follow.html
The pacing wasn't right for me, but her writing is very vivid, so I can understand why other readers really enjoyed the book.
DeleteI haven't read The Scorpio Races yet, but I do plan to via audiobook. I must say that I haven't been madly in love with the two Stiefvater books I've read (Shiver & Lament).
ReplyDeleteI might read Shiver, but Lament doesn't sound all that appealing to me.
DeleteMhm...haven't read that book yet...but I read Shiver and I'm getting the feeling that you should really like Stiefvater's books more for the writing then for plot etc.

I completely agree with you! Her writing in The Scorpio Races was excellent; I particularly liked her descriptions of the setting. It was the story itself that I couldn't get into, and I didn't find any of the characters especially memorable.
DeleteI haven't read that book! I did read her Shiver books though and didn't enjoy them as much as I thought I would.
ReplyDeleteThanks for visiting my blog! New follower!
If I do read Shiver, I hope that it's a little more action-packed than The Scorpio Races was.
DeleteThanks for following!
Haven't read the book but I've heard many mixed opinions about it.
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by my blog!
New Follower :)
It was one of those books where I could see why other people liked it even though I didn't.
DeleteThanks for following!
I have not read it yet. I don't like books that are slow. I need action and good pace to be interested.
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by.
New Follower! xxoo
I'm that type of reader, too. I felt like the action was missing for the most part in this one, and I had a hard time getting through it.
DeleteThanks for following!
I didn't read that yet :). Nice blog following you follow back blog hop FF# http:// www.vampandstuff.com

DeleteThe good thing about Maggie though, is that she's a fascinating author to interact with. If you ever get the chance to see her on tour, you should do it.
ReplyDeleteThat's really great to hear! I've never been to any kind of author event and would love to do so someday.
DeleteThanks for stopping by.
ReplyDeleteReturning the favour.
Thanks for dropping by!
DeleteI've only read her Wolves of Mercy Falls trilogy, but sorry it fell flat for you! Have you read her new book The Raven Boys?
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by and sorry I'm so late in hopping back!
I'm thinking about reading The Raven Boys. I like the premise, but I'm a little worried that the pacing is going to be similar to The Scorpio Races.
DeleteI was actually going to purchase this tonight. It sucks when a story is well-written, but just doesn't interest you.
ReplyDeleteThanks for stopping by my blog! Following back :)
It drives me crazy when that happens. I want to love the book because of the writing, but I can't because the story just isn't holding my attention.
DeleteThanks for following!
I've neither read nor heard of this book.
ReplyDeleteThanks
