The revenge part of the story is what drew me in; if the book hadn't gone in that direction, it's likely I would have quit this.Lee @ Rally the Readershttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03316252000736657757noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3873992034703741659.post-53171963976766246942013-02-23T22:07:09.198-05:002013-02-23T22:07:09.198-05:00And I had no idea what was going on for almost one... And I had no idea what was going on for almost one third of the book! - this is why I stopped reading this and never went back. I've only read one selkie book and I wasn't really fascinated by it. I had high hopes for this because I was hoping the magic will make up for the fishy tale (pun intended). I decided that I've been a good reader and do not deserve to be tortured by this book. I think keeping that in mind while reading it will definitely help you adapt to its writing style quicker than I did. It's the type of novel that just leaves you speechless when you're done reading it. I completely understand what you mean about feeling emotionally drained by this- Lanagan sure knows how to pack a wallop with her prose!Lee @ Rally the Readershttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03316252000736657757noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3873992034703741659.post-80529858056538041092013-02-22T09:53:46.417-05:002013-02-22T09:53:46.417-05:00That's an excellent point, Katja! Since I've started reading so much YA over the past two years, I find that when I pick up an adult novel, I'm anxious to get to the heart of it.

As tempted as I was to not finish The Brides of Rollrock Island because it wasn't doing anything for me, something kept telling me to hang in there. I think I should start listening to that little nagging voice in my head more often because it was absolutely right this time!Lee @ Rally the Readershttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03316252000736657757noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3873992034703741659.post-34257033585174976022013-02-21T19:19:16.672-05:002013-02-21T19:19:16.672-05:00I am so curious about this story but I will bear i...I am so curious about this story but I will bear in mind it starts out slowly! Lanagan's prose is really out of this world. I had a really hard time naming the emotions and feelings she managed to evoke from me. From time to time, I had to take a breather because I was getting emotionally drained.

You've written a great review. :) I had a hard time stringing together my thoughts, but you did it quite splendidly! Lately, I feel as though YA fiction's made me impatient with other types of novels. I guess because we're thrown the hook to a story from the beginning and I wonder if that doesn't make me a less patient reader than I used to be. Of course there are always exceptions, and this sounds like a good one :)Katja Weinerthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/10783876476292438371noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3873992034703741659.post-67570567006221881932013-02-21T11:23:52.552-05:002013-02-21T11:23:52.552-05:00I hope you do decide to give it another try! It defies description in a lot of ways, and in the review, I tried to stick to the absolute basics of the story. And this book is completely worth toughing out; when I finally saw how the story was coming together, it was a true "Aha!" moment!Lee @ Rally the Readershttps://www.blogger.com/profile/03316252000736657757noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-3873992034703741659.post-90958620831552893442013-02-21T09:12:53.997-05:002013-02-21T09:12:53.997-05:00I got this a while back from the library and I was...I got this a while back from the library and I was realy excited to read it, but for some reason I never got to it. So it's good to know this is a slow-start kind of book, with prose that may be a bit more difficult than is the norm. But it definitely sounds like it's worth it if you're willing to stick with it!Renae @ Respiring Thoughtshttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01269581772628307546noreply@blogger.com
